Xila Amarela lies within the area of the Parque Estadual Marinho da Pedra da Risca do Meio, created by State Law No. 12.717 of 09/05/1997. The park is the only state marine protected area in Ceará. Its creation also aimed to preserve artisanal fishing, and the area is heavily used by jangadeiros. Fishermen call the park's rock formations “riscas” or “cabeços”, and since the protected area lies in the central portion of the area, that is where the name Pedra da Risca do Meio comes from.
