The Walsa is a 1968 Mac Laren tugboat that belonged to Wilson, Sons. It was deliberately sunk as an artificial reef on May 28, 2009 by AEMPE, together with UFPE and UFRPE and under an IBAMA license. It is the tenth artificial wreck in Pernambuco and the eighth in the Recife area.
On the day of the sinking, the tow left at 6:25 a.m. on a very calm sea and reached the site at 8:45 a.m. The Walsa went down at 9:55 a.m. and came to rest in sailing position. Two video cameras went down with it, one at the bow and one at the stern, and recorded the sinking. Because the tug sank stern first, its transom has a large dent, probably from the impact with the bottom.
On the Walsa, divers can find enormous schools of yellow-striped grunts, thousands of fish strong, to the point that the hull itself is hard to see. In the region, the best time to dive usually runs from September to May, and in June, July and August the rains usually make the sea rough.
