The Vapor dos 48 is the Jaguaribe, a paddle steamer built in 1860 in Port Glasgow by John Reid & Co for the Cia Pernambucana de Navegação Costeira a Vapor. It carried troops during the Paraguayan War and ran the route to the prison on Fernando de Noronha. Already out of service, it was scuttled on the high seas in April 1892, as a disposal. Its identity remained unknown for decades and was only confirmed in 2024–2025, by cross-checking historical records with engine measurements taken by divers in a double-blind test.
The wreck is known for the large sea urchins and moray eels on its structure, and many moray eels and Diadema sea urchins live on it. Several large groupers also live on the wreck. There are large sponges on the starboard side and, just beyond, a large garden eel field.
In the region, the best season usually runs from September to May; in June, July and August the rains usually leave the sea rough.
