Brazil
The Jorge Lima siphon was named in 2021 in honor of paleontologist Jorge Luiz Lopes da Silva, of UFAL, and of Simpliciano Lima, a pioneer of the Lapa Doce explorations. On the expedition in which it received its name, a further 1,300 m of submerged passage were surveyed, and the passage continues upstream. The siphon passage was used to connect the northern section of the Lapa Doce system.
Simpliciano de Oliveira Lima Filho, known as Sr. Lima, one of the people honored in the siphon's name, discovered several caves in the Chapada Diamantina and founded the Bahia Society of Speleology (SBAE). Venezillo limai, a troglobitic isopod described in 2023 from a specimen collected in the Lapa Doce system, was named in his memory.
Like many caves in Iraquara, the Lapa Doce system was first used to supply water to the local population. The system's caves were only officially explored and visited by speleologists in 1986, by members of a French-Brazilian expedition.
