Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil
The Sucuri River, in Bonito (Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil), is widely considered one of the most crystal-clear rivers in the world, fed by karstic springs flowing through limestone aquifers that naturally filter the water and keep underwater visibility above 30 meters on calm days. The drift snorkeling tour starts at Fazenda São Geraldo, about 18 km from downtown Bonito, and covers a 1,800-meter route of slow-current floating over a sandy riverbed that rarely exceeds 3 meters in depth, making it accessible even for first-time snorkelers and children. Water temperature stays around 22 °C year-round, comfortable for extended snorkel sessions in a shortie wetsuit. Wildlife sightings include large schools of piraputanga (Brycon hilarii), dourados, piaus, and curimba feeding near the submerged roots of the protected riparian forest that lines the banks. The riverbed is carpeted by preserved aquatic vegetation, and secondary springs bubble up fine sand at specific points along the route, offering an unmatched freshwater snorkeling experience in inland Brazil.
