Brazil
Redonda Sul was among the least-dived sites in the park in 2017. Redonda Island, the second largest of the archipelago's five islands, is about 400 m across and 36 m high and lies west of Santa Bárbara, separated from it by a channel about 4 m deep. Fringing reefs line the island's southeast coast, and close to it there is a mosaic of macroalgae with an extensive bed of the brown alga Sargassum. In the Abrolhos region, groups of humpback whales tend to arrive from July to November to shelter and nurse their newborn calves, in the largest concentration of the species on the Brazilian coast.
