Brazil
The Praia do Francês reefs are made of sandstone, sedimentary rock cemented layer by layer with sediment and the remains of marine organisms, which helps life attach and makes the environment rich in biodiversity. The left side of the beach has calm sea and is surrounded by five kilometres of coral reefs, and boats run out to the coral banks, where people dive in the natural pools.
The sheltered cove is home to more than 100 species of invertebrates, including corals, sponges, starfish, molluscs such as shells and octopuses, crustaceans such as crabs, swimming crabs and lobster, and polychaete worms. The region's reef fish have been catalogued in an identification guide, and there is also a guide to the invertebrates recorded at Praia do Francês.
At Praia do Francês, the weather tends to be more stable and sunny from September to March, and April to August tends to be rainier. In periods of light wind and plenty of sun, the sea at the beach tends to become as calm as a swimming pool, with blue-green water.
