Pataxós Reef lies within the Corumbau Marine Extractive Reserve. In a survey carried out in 2000, it ranked among the surveyed sites with the highest algae richness.
In that same survey, 18 species or categories of cnidarians were recorded on the reef, a group that includes corals, hydrocorals, zoanthids and related animals. Among the fish recorded was Gramma brasiliensis, which generally stays upside down under ledges and crevices. Halichoeres poeyi was also recorded on the reef in that survey.
