Brazil
Recife das Timbebas is a reef platform formed by the merging of several chapeirões (pinnacle reefs), and the eroded top of these coastal reefs has been carbon-14 dated to 3,000 to 4,000 years. The walls of Timbebas have recorded one of the highest coral covers on the Abrolhos Bank, with major contributions of Montastraea cavernosa and Mussismilia hispida. The Brazilian-endemic brain coral Mussismilia braziliensis was relatively more abundant in the no-take zones, Timbebas among them. Among the fish recorded on these reefs is Serranus flaviventris. In Abrolhos, the best time to dive tends to be from December to February, when the sea is clearer.
