Brazil
The south face of Ilha Comprida is steeper and battered by waves, quite unlike the north face, which serves as the sheltered anchorage of the Cagarras Archipelago. Exposed to southerly wind and waves, the site is hard to reach, does not seem to be among the destinations offered by dive operators and receives few visits. The public use plan provides for photography and scuba diving at the site, including drift diving.
The site holds a large number of colourful cnidarians (Corynactis sp.). Detailed scientific information on the marine biodiversity of this face of the island is still lacking.
Like the other Cagarras islands, Ilha Comprida is made of granitic-gneissic rock, mainly Pão-de-Açúcar Granite, and rises 66 m above sea level. It is the most visited island in the archipelago, especially its more sheltered northern part, and it has no seabird nesting colonies. From Posto 6, in Copacabana, Ilha Comprida is about 6 km away, around 15 minutes by speedboat.
