Brazil
The Piscinas Naturais de Paripueira form between coral banks and hold a large concentration of marine life, making up a large, translucent natural aquarium full of fish, corals and sea urchins. They lie in an area that is home to the Paripueira Municipal Marine Park, within the Costa dos Corais.
In 1997, a study led by oceanographer Gabriel Louis Le Campion mapped the coral reefs of the Paripueira natural pools. After that, marine biology students began guiding the local operator's staff and customers on preservation. In 2024, the Paripueira natural pool was the best preserved in the entire Costa dos Corais APA, a result of that awareness work.
Schools of colorful fish swim right alongside visitors. Biologists accompanying the trip have shown visitors sea urchins, algae, starfish and small crabs. In the region, the dry season, from September to March, tends to be the best time to visit Paripueira, with less rain.
