Lago das Estrelas was born from the main crater of a diabase basalt quarry worked in the 1980s to pave the BR-290 highway, and the degraded area was later restored by Fundação Gaia. The lake lies within Rincão Gaia, the rural headquarters of Fundação Gaia, an environmental NGO founded by José Lutzenberger on June 17, 1987. Covering about 20,000 m², it is 125 km from Porto Alegre and is used for diving courses of various levels. In the lake, divers swim among fish and turtles.
