Pedra do Velho is a small slab where lobsters and moray eels live. It lies on the southern margin of an ancient channel of the shelf, 15 km east of Pium beach, and the nearest reef, Barreirinhas, is 2.5 km away. Unlike the neighboring reefs, it is not aligned with the others and has an ESE-WNW orientation.
Together with Pedra do Félix, it is the reef with the lowest rugosity and habitat complexity among those studied on the Pirangi shelf. It is also one of the five Pirangi reefs mapped in detail with side-scan sonar and multibeam bathymetry.
In the region, this sector of the shelf is important for the migration, feeding and nesting of sea turtles. On the Pirangi shelf, lobster is the most exploited seabed resource, caught with traps called marambaias.
