Brazil
The rocky shore at Parcelzinho is home to moray eels and crustaceans. On the small reef, queen triggerfish and flying gurnards are a constant presence, among other species. On the boat ride to the Comprida, Couves and Rapada islands it is common to see groups of dolphins.
Among the main islands of the group, Comprida, Couves and Rapada, Couves is the only one with beaches. The Couves archipelago is home to the Toca da Velha, a small cave carved by the sea into a rock about 12 metres high. It is said that the name comes from a woman of the Couves family who sold water and flour there to boats sheltering from rough seas. In the region, the water averages around 24 °C through the year and can reach 27 °C between February and March. Because of its geographic position, Ilha das Couves is subject to sudden changes in weather and sea that leave the water murky, as well as thermoclines near the bottom.
