Brazil
The nickname Queimado comes from the fire that sank the ship. The sinking claimed no lives: fishermen on jangadas saw the flames, and the 81 people on board, crew and passengers, were rescued in eight lifeboats. The wreck gave its name to the APA Naufrágio Queimado, created by state decree in December 2018 and covering 422.69 km² between João Pessoa and Cabedelo.
Today the wreck is home to varied marine life, with barracudas, lambarus, xaréus and turtles. The xiras are so numerous that they can get in the way of seeing the wreckage. In all, Queimado is home to more than 60 species of fish.
In João Pessoa, summer is usually the best time to dive, with warm, clear water, although clean water can also occur in winter. In Paraíba, the good diving season usually begins in December, when the wind drops and the water becomes clearer and warmer, with low waves, and it tends to stay that way for the following five months.
