Brazil
The Naufrágio dos Remédios is the Forte dos Remédios, an LCT Mk5 (tank landing craft) built in the United States. It was bought by the Brazilian Armed Forces General Staff, together with the Gonçalo Coelho, to supply Fernando de Noronha, which had no port at the time, and its name honours the archipelago's fort. When it sank, the eight crew members were rescued by helicopters when they were already in boats. As refloating the ship was not worthwhile, the General Staff abandoned it and received the insurance.
For years, it was believed that the name Remédios came from a cargo of medicines. Divers read the raised inscription "Cypress - US Army" on the hull, and only later did historical research identify the ship as the Forte dos Remédios.
The hull is often covered by a school of xilas or sardines, and there are schools of fish around it. Barracudas and rays are seen on the starboard side. Moray eels also appear on the wreck. In September 2011, divers recorded many fish, moray eels, xiras, camurupins and lobsters.
