In 2013, the leafy algae recorded at Mestre Vicente made up a percentage nine times greater than that of calcareous algae, and the density of sponges was the highest among the seven reefs studied in the area. Among the fish, the piranjica (Kyphosus sectatrix) was that year the species with the greatest biomass. Also in 2013, Mestre Vicente had the greatest variety of growth forms of organisms among those seven reefs, with seven types found within 1 m². At the same time, 42% of the stony coral colonies sampled were bleached. Mestre Vicente may be part, together with Barreirinhas, Pedra do Félix, Meros and Cabeço do Leandro, of a line of reefs that would correspond to an ancient shoreline. In the Pirangi area, sea conditions for diving tend to be best between December and April.
