Brazil
Mato Verde lies in a cove of Santa Bárbara Island sheltered from the prevailing northeast and east winds. It is the welcome dive, where visitors get acclimated and adjust their gear. The site has a cave 12 m long, and part of the fringing reef sits above water at low tide, forming a pool inside. Small sharks are often seen in this pool.
The reef has brain corals, polychaete worms and anemones, with schools of parrotfish and angelfish, as well as groupers, barracudas and turtles. There are also carnivorous reef fish such as grouper and barracuda, herbivores such as surgeonfish, the ornamental Gramma brasiliensis and several cleaner fish.
In the Abrolhos region, the best season tends to run from December to March, with better visibility, calmer seas and water between 24 and 27 °C. From June to November, during the humpback whale season, visibility in the region tends to be considerably reduced.
