The most visited area of the Ilhas Itatiaia tends to be Boqueirão, as the largest island of the archipelago is known. The archipelago lies 1,000 m from Praia de Itapoã and is made up of seven islands, some of them small rocky islands with no vegetation. The largest island is surrounded by six islets, and natural pools form among the rocks. In February 2019, a recreational dive found the place well preserved and produced records of the local biodiversity.
Since 1988, the Projeto Andorinhas do Mar has worked to conserve the trinta-réis on the coast of Espírito Santo. Facilities on the Itatiaia and Escalvada islands support research, monitoring, vegetation management, visitation control and environmental education. In 1993, a breeding colony of Puffinus lherminieri (pardela-de-asa-larga) was also recorded in the archipelago.
