Brazil
The name Ilha Mata Fome probably comes from the abundance of fish in its waters. Although small, at 391 m long and 219 m wide, it is, in proportion, the island with the most indented shoreline in the Santa Catarina archipelago, with 1,363 m of coastline.
One stretch of the island is known as the "aquarium" for its large numbers of colourful fish and corals, and seahorses and starfish are also found there. Sergeant majors, porkfish, damselfish, groupers, butterflyfish, grunts and moray eels are reported at the island, as well as turtles. Guitarfish, octopuses and rays can also be seen at dive sites in the region.
Because the island is close to the coast, on days of heavy swell the sea can become rough, which makes diving dangerous.
