Brazil
In the waters of Ilha do Guaraú, it is common to see fish and turtles during a visit. The surroundings of the island are also home to corals and lobsters. At low tide, a natural pool forms next to the island.
Gulls, frigatebirds and other birds nest and live on the island. In the region, the islands of the refuge support the feeding, shelter and breeding of migratory seabirds, such as the trinta-réis-real, which is endangered, and the trinta-réis-de-bico-vermelho, and serve as a nesting ground for the gaivotão and the tesourão.
The island, also known as Ilha do Abrigo, is part of the Refúgio Estadual de Vida Silvestre das Ilhas do Abrigo e Guararitama, created by São Paulo State Law 14,982 of April 8, 2013. The refuge covers this island, Guararitama and the surrounding sea, a total of 481 ha. The island also has a navigation aid lighthouse and serves as a reference point for fishing boats to anchor.
