Brazil
Ilha do Coral belongs to the Serra do Tabuleiro State Park, a strictly protected conservation unit since 1975. Around the island there are many fish, such as groupers, bluefish and sea breams.
The island holds an archaeological site with rock inscriptions and burials, a sign of ancient occupation. The inscriptions, probably more than two thousand years old, form two panels of petroglyphs; one of them was dynamited by treasure hunters before 1960, and today only fragments remain among the rocks. The authorship of the site is debated: because of the burials, it has been attributed to the Guarani, while the emphasis on the petroglyphs links it to the Jê or Itararé peoples.
The island also has an old lighthouse and, among the islands of the park, it has the most substantial vegetation and is the only one with a freshwater spring. On the east side, in the lower central part, there is a small biodetrital beach about 20 m long, and the island's geology is marked by the Ilha do Coral Dike, with metre-sized xenoliths of the Paulo Lopes Granite.
