Seen from certain angles, the small island in front of Toque-Toque Pequeno beach looks like a turtle emerging from the sea. São Paulo State Decree 53,525, of 8 October 2008, included Apara among the special management areas of the North Coast Marine APA in São Sebastião, aimed at protecting biodiversity, combating predatory activities and supporting fishing productivity. In the area, which also includes the Toque-Toque Pequeno, Calhetas and Toque-Toque Grande sites, there are many holes and shelters, and turtles, groupers and moray eels are frequently seen.
