Ilha de Jaguanum is the largest of a chain of islands that bounds Baía de Sepetiba to the west. Three species of sea turtle occur in Baía de Sepetiba: the green turtle, the loggerhead and the leatherback.
The island was once called Jaguaramenon. In the mid-17th century, the Indigenous people who lived on it moved to Piaçavera, today's Ilha de Itacuruçá, and from there went on to the mainland.
