On the top of Ilha da Cocanha, a mansion built by Armenian businessman Marcos Keutenedjian hosted São Paulo's high society in the 1950s and 1960s. All the building materials were brought by boat, the path from the pier to the manor house was paved and lit by a generator, and an imported jeep carried people from the pier up to the mansion. Trails on the island lead to the old manor house, one of the site's attractions.
The island attracts turtles, rays, octopuses and dolphins, as well as encrusting organisms such as sponges, corals, scallops and microalgae. The islands and rocky shores of Caraguatatuba are home to groupers and other fish.
The Fazenda Marinha da Cocanha has operated since 1987 and comprises 17 farming areas over about 40,000 m² of sea.
