Brazil
The Ilha da Vitória archipelago, where Escuninha lies, is about 22 km east of Ilha de São Sebastião (Ilhabela) and 30 km from the mainland. The islands of the archipelago have no beaches: they are surrounded by rocky shores and inlets called sacos. Ilha da Vitória is home to a traditional caiçara community that lives from artisanal fishing. On the boat ride to the archipelago it is common to spot bottlenose dolphins, Bryde's whales and even humpback whales. In early summer, thermoclines sometimes occur at the archipelago's sites, bands of very cold water in the water column.
