The Elmete left Buenos Aires on 28 January 1895 bound for Antwerp, carrying bales of wool, sacks of grain and 1,240 live sheep, with 22 crew members and 7 cattle handlers on board. The ship was stuck on the reef for a week and, on 12 February 1895, slipped off and sank. The crew was taken aboard by the American barque Mourovia and landed in Barbados. The Elmete's metal is heavily corroded, so entering the engine room is not recommended.
