Dolina dos Maracanãs was once known as Buraco das Araras. The private area was closed for two years because visitors did not conserve the site, and when it reopened it received its current name and stricter conservation rules.
The new name was given to live up to the true identity of the place: the birds the sinkhole is named after, which have made it their home. On the rim of the sinkhole, toucans and other birds can also be seen.
