It is said that dives had been taking place at Dolina do Pai João for some 20 years, but the exploration expedition team found no signs of previous surveys. In 2024 the work returned to the sinkhole to continue the exploration started in 2023, with a hyperbaric chamber assembled on site and support from the Mato Grosso Fire Department. By 2024, about 700 m of passages had been explored and surveyed in the cave.
The sinkhole descends in a vertical shaft about 20 m in diameter, which further down splits into two tunnels that rejoin. It is not a spring: it works as a lake connected to ascending conduits. It is said that, in the rainy season, the water level inside the sinkhole can rise more than 10 m above what is seen during dives.
In the Nobres region, four research expeditions have already covered about 2 km of flooded galleries.
