Brazil
Since the 17th century, Dolina Água Milagrosa served as a refuge for enslaved people from neighboring farms. On 18 June 2008, CECAV cleared the sinkhole for contemplative tourism and recreational diving, and it was in that year that it officially opened to tourism. In 2013, the site was the setting for an underwater wedding, which was featured in a television report.
The formation may have arisen from the collapse of the roof of a cave that existed there thousands of years ago, caused by small faults. In 2017, a new fish species, Astyanax dolinae, was described from specimens collected in the sinkhole.
The best time is usually the dry season: in 2010 it was given as March to November and, in 2018, as May to October. The color of the water varies through the year between turquoise blue and emerald green. During the rainy period, between October or November and March or April, the water usually turns green as algae proliferate. From April or May until September or October, the blue usually returns, which favors snorkeling and scuba diving.
