Chapeirão Atlântida is a little-visited site in the Abrolhos region. Because it has not yet reached the surface, the chapeirão has no mushroom shape: it has a huge base on the bottom and tapers upward, with vertical walls and towers reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral. Passages and tunnels lead to a large chamber where about 15 divers fit at the same time. Besides several species of corals and other organisms with calcareous skeletons, large fish such as sharks, rays and groupers known locally as badejos sometimes appear.
