Brazil
The dive is a drift along an interesting rock formation, with plenty of marine life. Schools of small fish, octopuses in their dens and many pufferfish are frequent.
Ilha da Menina, which gives the channel its name, is also called Ilha da Filha or Pitanga and is the smallest of the islands in the Itaipu cove. It is the target of an ecological restoration project by the Niterói city government.
The Itaipu cove is sheltered by the alignment of the Pai, Mãe and Menina islands. The rocky reefs of these three islands, within the area of the RESEX Marinha de Itaipu, created in 2013, are important habitats for reef fish and benthic life. In the Itaipu region, 183 fish species have been identified, 26 of them elasmobranchs.
