In the lake of Cachoeira da Lagoa Azul, several schools of fish can be seen swimming, along with the effect of the falling water. Despite the name, the waters take on shades of green depending on the height of the Sun. The upper part of the waterfall has natural pools of crystal-clear blue water and a panoramic view.
Lago de Furnas, into which the waterfall flows, is artificial: it was created in the 1960s for power generation at the Furnas Hydroelectric Plant. In the Capitólio area, the best time tends to be from April to September, when the rains ease, but on very cold days the water can be off-putting.
