Cabeço do Meio lies within the Pedra da Risca do Meio State Marine Park, created by State Law No. 12,717 of 05/09/1997. The park is the only state marine protected area in Ceará. Local fishermen call the rock formations in the region “riscas” or “cabeços”, and because the protected area sits in the central part of the area, it was named Pedra da Risca do Meio. The park was also created to preserve artisanal fishing, in an area heavily used by jangada fishermen.
