Brazil
Stuck on the rocks, the Bretagne could not be saved by two tugboats, and the stranded ship also suffered looting attempts. On seeing the extent of the accident, the captain took his own life with a gunshot. Its remains are mixed with those of the Germania, a German steamer that lost its rudder 500 m from the Farol da Barra in August 1876 and sank on the rocks; because it was close to the coast, all crew members and passengers were saved. Common sightings on the wreck include grouper, boxfish and pufferfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, moray eels, starfish, lobsters, shrimp and corals, including brain coral. In the Parque Marinho da Barra, where the wreck lies, divers swim among fish, seahorses, corals and sea turtles. In Salvador, dives usually take place throughout the year, but in winter the options tend to shrink because of bad weather.
