Sao Sebastiao, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Located 35 km off São Sebastião, the Alcatrazes Archipelago is one of the largest marine reserves in southeastern Brazil. Once a Navy bombing range and now an ecological station managed by ICMBio, it features rocky islands surrounded by clear, current-swept waters. Divers explore granite walls, swim-throughs and boulder fields between 5 and 40 meters, encountering grouper, snapper, eagle rays, nurse sharks and seasonal manta rays. Visibility ranges 8 to 25 meters and conditions favor intermediate to advanced divers. Access is by authorized operators only and limited to designated mooring points (poitas). Best diving runs December through April.
