Caravelas, Bahia, Brazil
Brazil's first marine national park, the Abrolhos Archipelago lies 70 km off Caravelas in southern Bahia. Five volcanic islands rise from a vast shallow reef of mushroom-shaped chapeirões — endemic coral formations unique to this region. Most dives are in 5 to 25 meters with visibility reaching 30 meters in peak season. Conditions are gentle, ideal for all certification levels, and the area teems with sea turtles, parrotfish, moray eels and reef sharks. Between July and November humpback whales calve nearby and their songs are audible underwater. Access is by live-aboard from Caravelas. Best diving runs October through March.
