In the 1980s, the Navy had the semi-submerged hull of the Ariadne Pandellis blown up so that a ship degaussing station could be installed nearby, and it still exists today. That is why little was left on the bottom: loose plates, part of the stern and frames remain on a sandy bottom. A 2025 video shows this wreckage completely covered in soft corals. The wreck site is marked by a yellow buoy, next to the rocky shore. In July 2025, an environmental operation removed the invasive coral Chromonephthea braziliensis from the waters off the coast of Itaparica.
