Brazil
Aquário Encantado is formed by three crystal-clear springs. The name comes from the blue colour of the water, the colourful fish and its resemblance to an aquarium, since it is crystal-clear and enclosed. It lies in transition forest between the Cerrado and the Mato Grosso Amazon, where families of monkeys and other animals can be seen.
Schools of local fish swim in the pool, such as dourados, piraputangas and piaus, along with the colourful peixe-mato-grosso. On the tour, which includes the pool and the descent of the Rio Salobra, around 40 fish species can be seen, as well as shells and other aquatic organisms. The Salobra stream, at Aquário Encantado, is the collection site of Hyalella nobrensis, a new species of small crustacean described in a scientific paper.
