Wadi Gimal North is the underwater extension of Wadi Gimal Island, which gives its name to the whole area. It lies just a few metres from Wadi Gimal Garden, but its structure is completely different. On the main reef you can often come across resident porcupine fish and calamari.
The name Wadi el Gemal means "Valley of camels", and the area was declared a National Park in 2003. Above the water, Wadi Gimal Island hosts the world's largest known nesting colony of sooty falcon. Nine bird species breed on Wadi Gimal Island, including gulls and terns, and the island also has a large patch of mangrove.
