Maldives
Vilingili Thila was declared a marine protected area on 21/10/1999, by decree 10-C/99/38. The protected area covers 263.36 ha and has no protection category assigned. The site appears in the official list of protected areas of the Maldives as of 2005, in North Maalhosmadulu atoll (Raa). The thila is also known as "Anemone City".
The site is recommended for those who enjoy underwater topography. There are eagle rays, gray reef sharks, giant stingrays, Napoleon, scorpionfish and, at the right time, manta rays. In the Dhigali region (Raa), from May to November the water is usually rich in plankton, and that is when manta rays tend to appear.
