The statues of the Underwater Museum were placed to draw attention away from the coral for divers whose fins were hitting it, and coral began to grow on them. The museum continued at Lighthouse rather than Mashraba because Lighthouse lies down-current, so the coral larvae released settle on the statues.
Among the pieces is a life-sized elephant built from recycled metal, old televisions, hookahs and gas cylinders, next to the statues of the gods Horus and Bes. It stands on the seagrass slope locals call the 'buoyancy park', where there are also metal shapes for buoyancy practice. Another statue, inspired by the god Ptah, honours Ahmed Gabr, record holder for the deepest dive. It is made up of about 100 pieces and was assembled underwater, like a puzzle.
The sculptures have become home to lionfish, moray eels and colourful reef fish. A moray eel lives on the statue of Bes.
