Torfa means "the tongue of the reef", and the site is precisely the reef tongue that extends from the northern tip of the Abu Nugar system. The name Nugar describes a road full of holes and stones: fishermen named the Abu Nugar system this way because it is full of small reefs and pinnacles. Along the reef tongue there is a coral garden with large table corals, and the plateau that runs to the drop-off has a coral garden with table corals. On the other side of the ridge are a big brain coral and a coral tower, and the top of the reef has many table corals. Next to the reef tongue there is a small crater-like lagoon.
