Maldives
In the area lies Thanburudhoo, which was a military training island. In July 2011, senior MNDF figures and Telos Investment proposed leasing it for 50 years for a "boutique surf resort", in exchange for US$5 million for facilities on Girifushi. Two famous surf waves in the Maldives, Sultans and Honkeys, break on the reefs of Thanburudhoo. The island covers 3.6 hectares, with no natural lagoon or sandy beaches.
