San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize
About a mile off San Pedro, on the seaward side of Belize's barrier reef, Tackle Box Canyons takes its name from a beachfront bar once facing the site. Narrow, deep canyons with vertical walls run 18-30m, threaded by a sponge-encrusted swim-through tunnel and a cave whose ceiling opening is just wide enough for a diver to pass. Visibility typically reaches a clear 30m with little to no current, though strong northeast winds can stir sediment off the sandy bottom near the reef cut, adding surge. Expect Caribbean reef and nurse sharks, green morays, green turtles, and horse-eye jacks schooling in the upper cavern reaches, plus occasional spotted eagle rays. Boat access only via permanent mooring; an intermediate site for certified divers comfortable with depth and swim-throughs.
