Egypt
About 360 m wide, Marsa Shouna is a medium-sized, well-sheltered bay. Shouna means "storage area", a use the bay has had in the past.
Large rays and green turtles appear without the need to go far, and ghost pipefish, snake eels and shrimpfish are seen frequently. Sea turtles are seen most in the center of the bay, often resting on the sand or feeding on the grass. This area is also home to guitar rays, which are fairly common, and seahorses, which are hard to spot when snorkeling.
A large school of golden trevallies hunts among the seagrass; interested in divers, these fish come very close and leave a trail of sand behind them. Marsa Shouna is among the dugong sighting sites listed in a scientific survey of the western coast of the Egyptian Red Sea.
