Shaab Sireer means "bed reef", a name that comes from the green turtles often seen sleeping there. Above the sleeping turtles, schools of snapper and bream cruise among the corals. Large whiptail rays are also seen.
Marsa Shouna, the bay where Shaab Sireer lies, is medium-sized, about 360 m wide, well sheltered and with a seagrass meadow in the middle. The bay appears on a scientific list of dugong sighting sites on the western coast of the Egyptian Red Sea.
