Egypt
At the southern tip of Sha'ab Mahmud, marked by a small beacon, Beacon Rock, lies the wreck of the British ship Dunraven, lost in 1876. Sha'ab Mahmud runs along the western side of the Ras Mohammed peninsula, about 6 miles long and 2.7 wide, oriented northwest to southeast. To the east lies a lagoon 11 km long and up to 5 km wide, open to the sea to the south. Smaller boats pass through the passages and anchor in the lagoon, where an overnight stay is possible on the way to the Thistlegorm wreck. Safari boats often use the interior of the lagoon as shelter for the night.
