Ramsey Sound is a north-south tidal channel between Ramsey Island and the St David's peninsula, 500-1600m wide, its central trench reaching 30-60m and flanked by shallower rock ramps to east and west. Sandy gravel sits over Precambrian-Cambrian bedrock, with 20-90m cliffs framing the passage. Tides run hard here, 6-7 knots through the main channel, spiking to 16-18 knots locally at The Bitches, where standing waves build to 2m. Entry is boat-only, timed around slack water, and reserved for advanced divers used to strong current and broken rock. Grey seals haul out and pup on Ramsey Island each autumn, and a resident harbour porpoise pod hunts the Sound daily, repositioning with the tide. Season runs April to October; drysuit recommended year-round.
