The Million Hope was built in Japan in 1972 as the bulk carrier Ryusei Maru. Six weeks before she sank, she was bought by Aksonas Shipping of Limassol, Cyprus, and renamed Million Hope. The cause of the grounding is uncertain: accounts mention a fire in the superstructure, high speed in poor visibility, or a combination of both. There were no casualties: the 25 crew members, mostly Filipino, only left the ship when it became clear she would sink, and all were rescued.
Today the ship's superstructure sits above the water. Between the hull and the reef lie the remains of another wreck, the Hey Daroma, crushed beneath the Million Hope. The sheltered areas of the wreck are home to many nudibranchs, crocodile fish and pipefishes, there are glassfish in the crane, and the main deck is full of lionfish.
